Chicago, Cubs first baseman Derrek Lee announced his partnership with Boston Celtics CEO and co-owner Wyc Grousbeck and the Carver Nonprofit Genetic Testing Laboratory at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine to combat Leber congenital amaurosis (LCA), an important cause of genetic blindness in children.
"Wyc and I look forward to lending our support to this important project," said Derrek Lee. "Seeing all the recent scientific progress up close has given us hope that treatments for LCA will not be too far away, and we hope that our efforts will bring similar encouragement to lots of other families who have been affected by this condition." Grousbeck agreed, "It is amazing to think that we have come as far as we have. Just ten years ago, not a single one of the LCA genes had been identified. Now the specific disease-causing gene can be found in more than two thirds of affected patients and some clinical trials of promising new treatments are just about to start."
